About the club
Since foundation we had many Journeys – inbound from all over the world and outbound to various countries including USA, Europe, Brazil, Australia, Russia, New Zealand, South Africa plus one themed Journey in 2016: “On the Trails of Dr. Martin Luther – 500 Years of Reformation.”
Our members are mostly retired people, some not fit enough to travel long distances anymore and also not able to host. For that reason our hosting capacity is now reduced to 16 guests.
We have quarterly membership meetings and meet at our regular gatherings every fourth Thursday of the month. Additionally, non-members are also invited to learn about our activities and to share the ideas and perspectives of Friendship Force with the aim of recruiting new members.
About the region
The majority of our members lives in the countryside near the beautiful medieval city of Nuremberg with its imperial castle and its imposing Gothic churches. Not far away are what we call the Franconian Mountains, a very picturesque part of northern Bavaria with dense forests, attractive hiking trails, challenging climbing rocks, rivers through charming valleys, inviting small towns, and there are a lot of old castles well preserved, but also some in ruins reminding us of the old days. The Alps are located some 250 km away in southern Bavaria.
About the Journey
We usually welcome our visitors at the Nuremberg Airport or at the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) in Nuremberg located about 20 km from where most of our members live. A visiting program for our guests will always include a guided Nuremberg city tour. Although the city was destroyed by 90% at the end of WW II, the “Friends of the Old City” have been doing a beautiful job reconstructing most of the historic buildings and the flair of the city.
As we are surrounded by many places worth visiting we always have to select where to go, preferably one or two locations that are listed with UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Bamberg, Würzburg, Regensburg and Bayreuth, famous for the Wagner Opera Festival, which takes place every year in August. Also Rothenburg o.d.Tauber is very attractive and well-known, and there are other much smaller towns of medieval character beautifully restored. On special request by the ambassadors a trip to Munich, the capital of Bavaria, can be arranged.
Bavaria is well-known all over the world as a beer producing and drinking country. We live in an area with the highest density of breweries worldwide. Depending on the time of the year, each village celebrates its own beer festival. So no need to travel to Munich. As the region along the Main River is famous for its vineyards we sometimes offer a wine tasting tour learning the complex and intricate wine making procedures. The final program for each inbound mostly includes a welcome and a farewell party tasting Bavarian specialities. Above all, we emphasize to experience and enjoy family life with the hosts according to the aim of FFI. Costs for each ambassador are about USD 150.
