About the club
The Friendship Force of Varel was founded in June of 1991 and has expanded during the years to approximately 100 members, one third of which have passed the age of 70, but they play an active and creative role in our club events. The Friendship Force of Varel covers a large area in the region with hosting homes up to 50 km/30 miles apart. Although many members of the club are meanwhile retired, they still represent a great variety of professional skills and hobbies.
Due to good relationships to the City Council, to the regional economic enterprises as well as to the local newspapers the activities and the idea of Friendship Force have become well established and accepted in the community and its region.
Besides the regular Journey programmes (2 incoming from overseas and 1 two weeks outgoing Journeys, not including the inner European Interclub visits), we have arranged and participated in themed Journeys with choirs, folk dance groups, music bands, and “Language Learners.”
About the region
Located on the shorelines of the North Sea, Varel is called the “city between water and forest.” Visitors enjoy the clean and fresh air and a healthy breeze of the saltwater climate and a stress reducing wildlife watching in the nearby forests. The coastal mud flats in their harmony with the tides and their unique fauna and flora have been recognised as UNESCO Natural Heritage. Varel – Dangast is considered to be the oldest seaside wellness spa and it is still very attractive and an insider tip for the holiday season at the North Sea.
Varel, today a city of approximately 25,000 inhabitants, was mentioned first about 800 years ago and has had a vital history. Witnesses of which are the “Schloßkirche” (Castle Church) with its very famous altar and the Historical Orphanage which is the hosting our club meetings. The local people are known as warm-hearted, honest and open-minded and they like to welcome friends from all over the world. www.varel.de
The flat and green coastal region around the city that is being used mainly for ranching and farming is increasingly getting involved in the production of alternative power by wind driven generators. The industry of Varel is producing aeronautical parts for Airbus, machinery, china, bricks and cardboard, whilst the inhabitants and tourists enjoy a variety of shops and stores in a pedestrian area of the inner city.
About the Journey
There are no standardized programmes for our incoming Journeys as our Journey Coordinator Team, usually formed by experienced JCs and trainees, are trying to prepare a unique and individual programme for our visitors which may include a boat ride, visits to the Emigration Museum at Bremerhaven, the ancient cities of Oldenburg and Bremen, the famous Brewery at Jever or the new Jade-Weser-Port at Wilhelmshaven and other various local sights of interest. Whilst the reception with the City Mayor in the town hall of Varel is a set ceremony there is always sufficient flexibility for the JCs to cope with items of special interest requested by the ambassadors in advance. Our Welcome or Farewell Parties have a good reputation as they are always offering surprises. Come and see us!
