About the club:
FF Berlin was founded in 1992 and has around 50 members. Our club can host 12 guests. Most of our members are retired. We like to welcome one or two incoming Journeys and one or two outgoing Journeys each year. We already hosted and visited clubs on all continents and have made friends all over the world. Our members also like very much to visit German Clubs and take part on the monthly club sightseeing tours in and around Berlin to discover interesting destinations.
About the region:
The German capital Berlin is located in the northeast of Germany with 3.7 million people. No other metropolis has experienced such frequent, radical changes transforming the face of the city. Although Berlin saw steady growth in its importance, dazzling epochs alternated with darker eras. The formerly divided city has succeeded in becoming a vibrant metropolis in the heart of Europe. Today some of the top sights are Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Reichstag, East Side Gallery, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, numerous museums, theatres, galleries, parks… Berlin is a very green city: forests, lakes and rivers Havel and Spree.
About the Journey:
The best time for visiting FF Berlin is May to September. We can host 12 guests. You could come by bus, train, or aircraft. There are two airports Tegel and Schönefeld. Most of our hosts live in apartments, scattered over all 12 districts of Berlin. You should be able to carry your luggage by yourself. Often stairs have to be climbed, due to lack of elevators, and typically there is no air conditioning. Berlin has an excellent public transportation system which is why private cars are rarely used. Ambassadors should be aware that there is also walking included in the program, so they should bring good walking shoes with them. Our Journey Coordinators prepare interesting programs that often include a visit of the Reichstag, the building of our parliament, as well as a sightseeing tour through the city by bus or by ship. If ambassadors are interested in something special like theater, we will try to arrange it (possibly with additional costs).
Our programs often lead the group for a day trip to Potsdam (the capital of the state Brandenburg) with its famous castles of Sanssouci and Cecilienhof. Just a 2 ½ hour drive away, you may visit the unique landscape of the Spreewald south of Berlin with canals and biotopes, which can be experienced by punting boats only. Such a tour can be arranged (additional costs) to the ambassadors. Usually we arrange one party during the week, which is normally a potluck dinner, where hosts contribute homemade food and other delicacies. Beside the official program, our hosts will make their own program with their guests. In case the ambassador group requests a special activity not planned by our club, we could help to arrange this, but there can be extra costs for the ambassadors.
